How it's done (collecting) — Buyers hunt estate sales, flea markets, and online auctions; authenticate by logo, casting marks, heat ring, and gate-mark (very old pieces show a gate mark on the base); inspect for cracks (a clean pan should "ring" when tapped), warps (it shouldn't rock or spin on glass), and pitting; then either preserve original seasoning or restore via electrolysis or lye and re-season. Condition assessment before purchase is the core skill.

When to use it (buy vs. pass) — Buy common-maker pieces in good condition as superb everyday cookers at modest prices; pursue rare logos, makers, and forms as collectibles; pass on cracked or badly warped pieces at any price unless they're display rarities. Match the purchase to whether you want a user or a collectible.

What goes wrong

Overpaying for common pieces hyped as rare; missing hairline cracks (which void cooking value); buying warped "spinners"; and over-restoring — aggressive grinding or sanding that strips machined smoothness and tanks both value and cooking quality. Learn the marks, inspect ruthlessly, and restore gently.
